Everyone experiences adversity in their lives. It can be anything from a small setback to a major challenge. It took someone shooting at me, whilst trying to arrest them for beating up their partner, to realise this. But the penny did not drop right away, it is how we respond to adversity that can make all the difference.
Some people let adversity defeat them, I had not given up, but I was lost for about 8 years trying to work this out. We can give up on our dreams and goals. But others, once clear, can use adversity as an opportunity to grow and learn. They can become stronger and more resilient and they often use their experiences to inspire others, just as it is in my case. A new career and a desire to help others, I am now a professional speaker covering this subject and the effects of PTSD.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to how to overcome adversity. But there are some things that can help:
- Don’t give up. The most important thing is to never give up. No matter how difficult things get, find a way to reset and then keep fighting.
- Find a support system. Having people who believe in you and support you can make a big difference. Talk to your friends, family, or a mentor.
- Focus on the positive. It’s easy to get caught up in the negative when we’re going through a tough time. But it’s important to focus on the positive things in your life, you may know my story, I was a rock bottom but I still did not give up.
- Take care of yourself. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and exercising. Taking care of your physical and mental health will help you to cope with adversity. I joined the gym to make myself do something and after a few months I started to see a real change.
- Learn from your experiences. Adversity can be a valuable learning experience. Take the time to reflect, this is the most valuable learning curve you could ever face, find what you need to know, make a pact with yourself and make sure you move forward.
Overcoming adversity is not easy, but it is possible. And it can be a powerful force for change. When we overcome adversity, we become stronger, more resilient, and more inspired.
If you are facing adversity, know that you are not alone. There are people who care about you and want to help. There are also many resources available to you. Don’t give up. Keep fighting. And never stop believing in yourself.
