As 2024 draws to a close, we stop work and start to think about having some downtime at home, spending it with the family and wanting to have some fun. However, our memories are short; if we can recall what happens every year, we will realise that we must prepare for all the problems that arise from such festivities.
As much as we want to believe Christmas is a time of relaxation and for making memories, most of the time, it is about managing chores, cooking, expectations and family.
Without wanting to make you feel depressed, we have to consider the last-minute training session that you need to do to make this Christmas the most relaxed and easiest one you have had for many years. The instruction is simple: follow the 3 step process, in this order, and I promise that you will find sense and peace in your days of entertaining and making fun happen.
Capacity
Need
Want
Understanding Capacity, Need, and Want to reduce your stress.
Recognising the difference between capacity, need, and want is essential. Capacity reflects what we can achieve; if we do not have capacity, we should not be thinking of taking anything else on. Think of a table, it will only have space for so many plates. If you want to swap some plates out, do so, but do not stack them.
Need represents 2 things, the most important is what is necessary for our well-being; do we need to do it, or can some one else take it on? The second part is the big question: Does it NEED to be done right now, or can it be done later? Be ruthless, consider only what you need.
Finally, Want indicates our personal desire; do we want to do it? If we don’t, then do not do it.
Each step will lead you to relaxation and peace. Either do it or ignore it. It does not mean that you cannot reassess the same situation an hour or so later and come to a different decision (I am thinking of the washing up). By distinguishing these three parts, we can prioritise our enjoyment and remove stress from our day, make informed decisions and have an amazing and happy Christmas, plus if we keep at it we will have an unforgettable New Year!
